The most dangerous moment in any build is when things start going well.
I’ve watched this happen more times than I can count — including to myself. You get some traction. Revenue is up. The team is clicking. The pipeline is full. And something almost invisible starts to shift. The urgency softens. The standard relaxes a little. The calls that used to be non-negotiable start getting moved.
Nobody decides to get complacent. It’s not a choice. It’s a gradual accommodation to comfort.
And then you look up six months later and the traction you had is gone — and you’re not sure exactly when it left.
The antidote isn’t anxiety. It isn’t manufacturing urgency or pretending things aren’t going well. It’s holding the standard regardless of the result.
The standard you set when things were hard should be the same standard you hold when things are good. Not because success is dangerous — but because the behaviors that created the success are the behaviors that sustain it. The moment you start coasting on the result instead of maintaining the practice, the decay begins.
Stay hungry when you’re full. That’s the discipline that separates the people who build something lasting from the ones who build something and then watch it erode.
The Takeaway
The standard that created the result is the same standard that sustains it — hold it especially when things are going well.
Keep Moving Forward!
