The work that changes everything is almost never visible while it’s happening.
This is one of the hardest things to hold onto when you’re in the middle of building something. The days you’re doing the foundational work — clarifying the thinking, having the difficult conversations, rebuilding after a setback — look unproductive from the outside. Sometimes they feel unproductive from the inside.
But that invisible work is doing something.
I’ve had stretches that looked, by any external measure, like I was stalled. Not much output. Not much visible momentum. And then something shifted — a relationship matured, a skill reached a threshold, a pattern I’d been unable to see became clear — and the next phase moved faster than anything I’d done before.
The invisible work was the preparation. I just couldn’t see it at the time.
The trap is optimizing for visible progress. For the metrics that are easy to measure and easy to report. Because those metrics often measure the wrong things — and chasing them can actually slow the invisible work that’s doing the real building.
Trust the process more than the scoreboard. The scoreboard catches up. It always does.
The Takeaway
The work that looks like nothing is often building what makes the next phase possible — trust it even when it’s invisible.
Keep Moving Forward!
