Most people wait to feel confident before they act. That’s backwards.
Confidence isn’t something that arrives before the work. It’s something the work produces. You don’t get confident and then try. You try, you complete something, and the completion deposits a small amount of confidence into the account. Do it enough times and you have something to draw on.
I was not a confident person in my twenties. I was anxious, uncertain, constantly second-guessing. What changed wasn’t that I found confidence somewhere. What changed was that I kept moving despite not having it — and the accumulation of those movements eventually produced it.
The founders and builders I’ve worked with who seem most sure of themselves are not the ones who started that way. They’re the ones with the most completions behind them. The longest record of starting something, finishing it, and starting the next thing.
You can’t think your way to confidence. You can’t read your way there. You can’t plan your way there.
You can only do your way there.
The action you’ve been postponing because you don’t feel ready enough — that’s the one. Do it. The feeling follows the doing. It never works the other way.
The Takeaway
Confidence isn’t something you find before you act — it’s what the act produces when you do it anyway.
Keep Moving Forward!
